Marketing Plan

Writing Your Marketing Plan!

Writing a marketing can be a confusing aspect of any business. Where do you go to get started? How do you identify your target demographic? What are the best ways to get your message out there? How do you make your offer stand apart from others in the market?

This is where a marketing plan comes into place. What is this? Actually, this is very similar to a business plan and is a document that details your marketing plans - what you're doing, where you're going with it and how you're going to get there.

A marketing plan should have several parts. First, it must begin with correct analysis of your market and the environment.

  • Where are your customers?
  • Where can you gain new customers?
  • What demographic most uses your product or service?
  • What trends are developing in your market area?
  • Each of these questions must be answered and many more, prior to planning your marketing strategy.

In addition, your marketing plan should include a review of your marketing mix, which can be defined as

  1. your product,
  2. your promotion,
  3. your environment,
  4. your market demographic,
  5. the price point of your product (especially as compared to that of competitors and the process of putting it all together.

Next, in your marketing plan you must identify marketing strategy which is how will you promote your product? Specify in you marketing plan your marketing strategy to get your message out to your target market. This will involve determining how you will appeal to your demographic and what methods you will use to promote your offerings.

The control of your market must also be defined in your marketing plan.

  • How will you react to changes in your market?
  • What happens when a competitor changes their price
  • What if a competitor revamps their own marketing plan and marketing

Controlling your market is an essential part of any marketing strategy.

In written form, your marketing plan should consist of the product you will promote, your entire budget for all forms of promotion, the location of your business, what your pricing approach you intend to use and how your market falls out (segments). Of course, a large businesses marketing plan will have much more detail to their plans, including implementation, distribution, a financial summary and an advanced marketing strategy.

A marketing plan is essential to your success, no matter what type of product or service you are marketing.  Without a viable plan, whether it be a direct marketing strategy, internet marketing strategy or brand marketing strategy, you can find your product is not well-received, that your competitors out price you or that your offering simply does not fit your demographic.
