Marketing Ideas

Online marketing has quickly grown to be among the standard venues for campaigns for just about any product. Where it used to be an option, it is now a necessity. Online marketing can be very cost-effective and can quickly prove its worth in capturing new customers. Coming up with marketing ideas for use on the Internet, however, requires a bit of research into the way technology is used. It may seem obvious, just buy a banner on a site, but the field is more technical than one may guess and there are solid, cost-saving options available.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways to get a product in front of the eyes of potential customers on the Internet. Affiliate marketing uses a network of advertisers who generally report to the agency from whom the campaign is contracted. These affiliates put the customer's advertisement on a network of related sites and are paid when someone clicks on that banner and takes an action at the advertiser's site. This marketing idea is based on accountability, reducing costs and simultaneously appearing on potentially hundreds of different sites. One of its advantages is that, if one receives no traffic, one pays no fee.

When the Internet first became heavily commercialized, there was a rush toward pop-up styles of advertising. These proved so unpopular with customers that some browsers include technology to filter such advertisements out. While pop-ups certainly do get a message in front of consumers, there is evidence that they are not the most effective form of marketing. Ideas that rely on essentially "tricking" a customer are generally poorly received. Studies have shown that surfers will deliberately avoid reading any intrusive advertising and that they are usually left with a negative impression of companies that advertise by such means.

Coming up with marketing ideas for use online should start by modifying successful campaigns that were done traditionally. For instance, an effective mailer or print advertisement can easily be modified for use as an email flyer. This type of marketing, when done correctly and ethically, is very effective. Working from a list of addresses of customers who chose to receive marketing materials and information, these emails can literally be sent out by the thousands for very little cost. Compared to a postal flyer campaign, there is much less loss if one of the flyers happens to be returned or to not entice a customer.
